Bernie is Cold
I’ll admit it: I don’t do as much crochet work as I used to. Clay is certainly my primary medium and focus, but my love for yarn and fiber arts is still very real. Every now and then a friend reaches out to ask if I can crochet something, and usually it’s a project that entices me enough to actually do it. This was no exception. I mean, how could I say no to a Bernie Sanders at the Inauguration doll? Answer: I could not!
I looked around at some patterns (damn, y’all are quick with those!), but ultimately decided to freehand it. The last doll I made was a sock monkey, and a lot bigger, but the idea is solid. Basically, tubes for arms, legs and torso, a not-quite-sphere for the head and just a flat blue rectangle for his mask. I did a fancy new kind of embroidery stitch for his eyes (pearl? Uh, IDK what it is called but I wrapped the thread around the needle a bunch of times then pulled it all through and BAM! Eyes.).
This project gave me an excuse to make a quick trip to the craft store, which is always appreciated! I also ordered 1mm beading wire for his glasses and have basically all of it left, which is giving me ideas about wrapping gemstones… Anyway! Here he is in his full glory!
He makes me so happy. He’s intended for a friend, of course, so I guess I’ll just have to make myself one, too! And, maybe you want one? I’ll be getting a made-to-order listing set up here in the NWB Shop so that you can request one. Stay tuned!
UPDATE: You can request your own Bernie is Cold doll from the NWB Shop, now!
