Unpopular Opinion: Coffee Edition
A friend recently lamented small coffee cups and their tendency to cause him extra trips up and down the stairs. Personally, I cannot stand a small mug. Anything under 12 ounces is literally for babies, in my humble opinion. And trust me, I’ve heard the arguments for 8 ounce coffee mugs, mainly the one about heat retention. Well, I’m a weirdo and like my coffee lukewarm. I know, it’s blasphemy, but that’s kind of my thing. Sorry I don’t like burning my tongue. Also, I can’t be drinking my coffee all at once. Stuff needs doing, and so my cup of coffee is most likely going to sit on my desk for at least an hour before its contents have been fully consumed. I don’t even have stairs in my house, yet I also hate having to get up and refill. So, clearly, I empathize with my friend’s plight, and I set out shortly after that conversation to make a big mug. Like, a really BIG one.
Nailed it. Now, keep in mind that clay shrinks; this particular clay body has a 10-12% shrink rate. Still, I’m guessing this thing is gonna hold 32 ounces at least. Possibly up to 48. I guess we’ll see! I have a lot of fun with the wood texturing, but it is just the beginning/background for the real decoration: mushroom fruiting bodies.
This big boy went through the bisque firing this weekend, so I’ll be able to glaze it next time I’m at the studio. Which will be in a couple of days. I was there yesterday, and I threw 10 skull mugs. 10! At least half of them are going to be SUGAR SKULL MUGS and I am super excited about that. So, stay tuned, dear reader!
